A Book Review: Great House, by Nicole Krauss

Monday, September 19th, 2011

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. This stunning work showcases Krauss’s consistent talent. The novel consists of four stories divided among eight chapters, all touching on themes of loss and recovery, and anchored to a massive writing desk that resurfaces among numerous households, much to the bewilderment and existential tension of those in its orbit, among them a lonely American novelist clinging to the memory of a poet who has mysteriously vanished in Chile, an old man in Israel facing the imminent death of his wife of 51 years, and an esteemed antiques dealer tracking down the things stolen from his father by the Nazis. Much like in Krauss’s The History of Love, the sharply etched characters seem at first arbitrarily linked across time and space, but Krauss pulls together the disparate elements, settings, characters, and fragile connective tissue to form a formidable and haunting mosaic of loss and profound sorrow.

Amazon and OverDrive announced the Kindle Library Lending Program

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Kindle | Elizabeth Taber LibraryToday Amazon and OverDrive announced the Kindle Library Lending program, which will enable Kindle customers to borrow and enjoy eBooks from our library, school, and college partners in the United States. The program is scheduled for launch later this year, and will significantly increase the value of the investments that libraries have made in OverDrive-powered eBook catalogs.

Many of our partners will immediately receive inquiries about this new program, so here is a brief introduction into what can be expected when the program launches:

The Kindle Library Lending program will integrate into your existing OverDrive-powered ‘Virtual Branch’ website.

Your existing collection of downloadable eBooks will be available to Kindle customers. As Overdrive | SAILS Inc | Elizabeth Taber Libraryyou add new eBooks to your collection, those titles will also be available in Kindle format for lending to Kindle and Kindle reading apps. Your library will not need to purchase any additional units to have Kindle compatibility. This will work for your existing copies and units.

A user will be able to browse for titles on any desktop or mobile operating system, check out a title with a library card, and then select Kindle as the delivery destination. The borrowed title will then be able to be enjoyed using any Kindle device and all of Amazon’s free Kindle Reading Apps.

The Kindle eBook titles borrowed from a library will carry the same rules and policies as all our other eBooks.

The Kindle Library Lending program will support publishers’ existing lending models.

Your users’ confidential information will be protected.

The Kindle Library Lending program is only available for libraries, schools, and colleges in the United States.

We’re thrilled that our library, school, and college partners will be able to provide Kindle customers with access to eBooks from their digital collections. And we look forward to providing you with more information on the launch of the Kindle Library Lending program as it becomes available.

The Annual Book Sale

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Elizabeth Taber Library Annual Book Sale | Marion MA Library

The Annual Elizabeth Taber Library Book Sale may feel far in the future, but the dedicated team of volunteers that run the event actually collect and sort books all year long.

We would first like to express our deep gratitude to all who donate. The book sale is in an integrial part of the Library budget, allowing the ETL to be semi-private, which means we do not rely 100% on funding from the town budget.

Second, we would like to remind you that the library happily supplies Letters of Donations which you can deduct as charitable donations.

Finally, we appeal to you, as competition is increasing! Many have commented on the three large new Book Donation bins that have sprung up in Marion and Mattapoisett. This, in combination with the popularity of ebooks, Kindle’s, Nooks and iPads, we are concerned for our supply.

We appreciate our patrons and your support. If you need assistance with the transportation of the books from your home to the library, please contact us, 508-748-1252.
