The Elizabeth Taber Library is looking for a qualified candidate to serve in the position of Full Time (35 hours a week) Children's Librarian.

Under the direction and management of the Director, the Children’s Librarian engages in all facets of library services, policies and procedures, and provides all patron-based services. These responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • program development of active, engaging librarian-led (or performer-led) programming that promotes literacy, library engagement, or community building, including organizing a robust summer reading program schedule and year-round story times
  • creating and maintaining a unique, relevant, and diverse collection guided by a robust and current collection development policy, including the selection, purchase, and maintenance of print and non-print materials based on the needs of the collection and community
  • grant writing efforts to financially support children’s programing activities
  • evaluating and updating department practices and procedures
  • maintaining statistical records of all program descriptions and attendance numbers
  • activities relating to program promotion including flyer creation, press releases, and outreach
  • guiding children and young adult patrons in use of all library services and resources including digital services
  • collaborating with local educational and cultural institutions, including but not limited to the reading specialists and librarians at Sippican Elementary, to produce summer reading lists and other cooperative programming endeavors
  • providing assistance in all circulation duties when needed
  • maintaining children’s web page and updating social media pages to promote children’s activities
  • assisting with all matters related to Children’s Room circulation of materials

Must maintain knowledge of children’s technology and programming developments through continuing professional development and education. Must be committed to providing high level of public service and maintaining a friendly, welcoming, and safe atmosphere for all patrons.

Library staff is evaluated on their performance yearly by the Library Director.

Qualifications include:

- M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school, with coursework in children’s services, prefered, relevent experience will be considered as an acceptable alternative

-one year of experience providing direct services to children in a public library or related environment strongly preferred

 

Schedule includes:

Full-time schedule of 35 hours per week, to include occasional Saturdays and evening hours related to children’s and young adult programming, or as schedule demands.

Yearly performance evaluations are performed by the Director.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Ability to operate standard office equipment; transport carts of materials which can weigh more than 100 pounds across a level floor or on a ramp; carry baskets of materials weighing up to 30 pounds; pay attention to details and concentrate on tasks despite frequent interruptions and moderate noise levels; communicate effectively and exchange accurate information with coworkers and members of the public; read and organize written material; place library materials on shelves or carts which can be located at floor level or overhead.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work in assigned area, including office areas, training rooms and library locations, as needed. Normal office exposure to noise, stress, and interruptions.
